A few weeks have gone by in my ISM 2 journey, and I’m already so excited for what’s to come. As a second-year student in the program, much of what we’ve done so far has been very familiar, but with a whole new topic, everything seems brand new again. I still have that same initial excitement that I had at the beginning of ISM last year, and although there’s a new set of challenges that come with virtual learning, I’m ready to take on round 2 of this journey!
One of the very first things that we did was create our mission statement and find our guiding quote for the year. I thought that it would be difficult to top the quote that I found last year, but after looking around for a little bit, I was able to find one that really spoke to me: “Allow your passion to become your purpose, and it will one day become your profession” (Gabrielle Bernstein). I incorporated this quote into the introductory speech that I gave last week, and I think that it resonated with a lot of my classmates as well. During this introductory speech, I spoke about a lot of different things like how my interest in the field of marketing came to be as well as some of the activities I’m involved with, but I think my favorite part was when I discussed my goal of ultimately pursuing what I’m passionate about. It’s a powerful message to share, and I hope that this goal of mine will soon become a reality.
After getting to know more about the interests and passions of my ISM peers through their introductory speeches, we moved into our first research assessment. Through this assessment, I was able to learn more about how the fields of marketing and social entrepreneurship (my ISM 1 topic last year) are connected. It was fascinating to see how integrated yet different these two fields really are. I hope to continue exploring where these two areas intersect, but I am also excited to transition a little more into the different sub-segments of the field of marketing.
